About the role

Are you are an experienced, resourceful and highly motivated engagement specialist who wants to bring about positive change in communities and places?  Dorset Council's transport planning team want to hear from you.  This role offers you the chance to shape transformative transport schemes in Dorset, reducing the impact of current travel habits and helping to achieve Dorset Council's ambition of becoming a carbon neutral county. We are a small friendly team looking to move to the next level and to deliver more, better and faster and you have a vital part in making that happen.

There are two specific focus points for this work – the delivery of active travel (walking, wheeling and cycling) schemes and the next phase of our electric vehicle charge point programme, bringing on-street charging to Dorset. The role will also drive the consultation and engagement strategy for our emerging Local Transport Plan 4. High quality active travel schemes and increased coverage of electric vehicle charging infrastructure are critical to achieving the objectives of the Dorset Council Plan: driving economic prosperity, creating stronger, healthier communities, creating sustainable development and housing, and protecting our natural environment, climate and ecology. To achieve these goals while being a more responsive customer focused council we want to work with communities to understand their needs and priorities and to tailor interventions to specific local circumstances. Changes to the highway network can be controversial, and as a listening council we want to get better at understanding community needs, be responsive to feedback and engage communities in the co-design of changes to our streets and spaces to make better places which reflect the ambition of our plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing engagement strategies for stakeholders and the public on active travel and low carbon transport in accordance with Dorset Council’s strategic transport objectives
  • Working closely with Dorset Council’s communications and consultations teams to ensure effective integration with other council initiatives
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders on active travel, public realm and sustainable transport projects
  • Engaging with internal stakeholders to embed active travel and sustainable transport activity within all relevant Dorset Council strategies and plans
  • Actively listening to stakeholders and communities to develop insights and local intelligence to better hone schemes to local circumstances.
  • Identifying and mitigating key risk points around public opinion and support for challenging schemes
About you

You will be a highly experienced strategic engagement and consultation specialist. You may have a marketing or public relations background in the public, private or third sector. You will have a proven track record of delivering challenging projects, using your skills to overcome barriers and working with stakeholders and communities to achieve better outcomes.
A background in transport, highways, planning or urban design is desirable but we welcome applications from people with other specialisms.
Experience of project management
