About the role

The role of Occupational Therapist within our Children’s Service makes a difference through offering support to substantially disabled children and young people with multiple or complex needs, their families and statutory/voluntary carers via assessment.

You will be working in a friendly and collaborative team with a mixture of experienced and more recently qualified practitioners. You will be supported through monthly supervision and regular team meetings. We prioritise wellbeing across our workforce including a talking therapies service and specialised advice and guidance.

We welcome applications from newly qualified Occupational Therapists who have appropriate previous experience of working with children and Dorset Council operates a Preceptorship scheme to support newly qualified therapists throughout their first year of professional practice.

What you can expect to be doing:

The successful candidate will hold their own caseload of children and be involved with managing incoming referrals through the Duty system. You will be responsible for a full range of work for children who are disabled including assessment, equipment assessment and provision, minor adaptations, major adaptations as well as the duty work.

The opportunity exists to develop and provide Sensory Profiling assessments to support intervention plans and to further develop this service to wider services within the Council.

The successful applicant will be expected to work in close liaison with our colleagues from the social work and family Support teams and form links with Adult Services and Preparation For Adulthood team in order to promote seamless transition from Children to Adult Services. Therapists work in close liaison with variety other agencies including Health, Education, Fostering Services, Housing, Dorset Accessible Homes Service, the integrated Equipment Service, builders, architects, surveyors and Equipment providers. 

The Occupational Therapy Service is based at Dorchester Local Office, covering West and North Dorset areas, and Westport House, Wareham covering the East of the county, consisting of a Team Manager and five Occupational Therapists across the two locations.

About you:

You will be an experienced, qualified, Paediatric Occupational Therapist with an interest in Sensory Integration. This role also provides the opportunity for the successful applicant to undertake Sensory Integration training.

You must hold an appropriate qualification (BSc or equivalent) in Occupational Therapy and hold a current registration certificate with the HCPC and understand the  disability issues and the impacts on children, parents and families, child development and family dynamics.

You will have an understanding of statutory Child Protection principles, procedures and practices and a fundamental understanding of childcare legislation and current working practices.

You will have an experience of working with children and/or adults who are disabled, experience of working with children and families. The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential.

You will receive regular and effective supervision and appropriate training will be provided for you to undertake the role and to meet professional development requirements.

The post has recently been awarded two LMI's therefore the maximum salary is currently £44,428 depending on the level of experience.

This is a full time role at 37 hours per week.

You must:
